[Math] Algebraic Function (대수함수)

Definition

An algebraic function is a function that can be defined as the root of a polynomial equation.

 

다항식 방정식의 근(or solutoin,해)으로
정의(표현)될 수 있는 function.

 

Quite often algebraic functions are 

• algebraic expressions 
• using a finite number of terms (항),
• involving only the algebraic operations (대수적 연산) 
  • addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and raising to
  • a fractional power (거듭제곱을 확장한 것).

Simplified Definition 

위의 정의는 정확하지만, 좀 와닿지 않는 부분이 있어서 아래의 쉬운 정의(?)를 추가한다.

수학 비전공자 입장에선
유한한 항(term)으로 구성된 대수 표현식(algebraic expression)으로
표현되는 function. 

• Elementary Functions (초등함수)만을 고려할 경우 (=수학 비전공자의 얇은 지식에선),
  • Transcendental function (초월함수: $e^x, \sin(x)$ 등 )이 아닌 것들은
  • 그냥 algebraic function이라고 생각해도 큰 지장이 없었다.
  • (수학의 엄밀성은 중요하지만, 사용하는 입장에서는 ==;;)
• 이를 바꿔 말하면,
  • Polynomial Func., Rational Func., Irrational Func. 을
  • 대수적 연산 (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractional power)을 사용하여
  • 결합하고 있는 함수라고도 할 수 있음.

참고: Limitations of Finite Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic function이 유한한 항을 가지는 대수적 연산으로 결합된 식이라는 정의가
엄밀한 정의라고 할 수 없는 이유는 다음과 같음

 

참고: Abel -Ruffini Theorem (아벨-리피니 정리)

Some algebraic functions, however, cannot be expressed by such finite expressions (this is the Abel–Ruffini theorem).

• 5차 이상의 mutinomial eq. 의 root는 finite expression으로 나타낼 수 없음.
• Abel-Ruffini 정리는 "불가해성의 정리" 로 불리는 대수학의 중요한 정리 중 하나.
• 이는 5차 이상의 일반적인 대수방정식은 근의 공식을 사용하여 해를 구할 수 없다는 것을 증명하고 있음.

예: Bring radical, which is the function implicitly defined by

$${\displaystyle f(x)^{5}+f(x)+x=0}$$

• 위의 solution은 거듭제곱과 유리수 연산만으로 표현이 불가함.
